Gene Smith has been a Central Texas fixture for almost two decades, acting and interpreting Texas and United States history for film and TV, on stage, and before school and community groups. So far this year, Gene played the role of the assistant cook in the up-coming movie Drive Angry, played Mr. Switchak in the movie Back Roads: A Texas Tail, and was an extra in the remake of the movie True Grit. Later this year he will assist with Hidden Histories, a television series concerning the history of Texas and the American West developed for European television.
Gene is the founder and artistic director of The Medicine Show, a travelling historical variety show that uses a Civil War-era delivery wagon, period costumes, weaponry and props to perform for schools, community groups, and other not-for-profits around the state. He is also a member of a street acting troop based in Austin, and is fluent in Spanish.
